Driving in Lesbos — Rules and Practical Information
Lesbos follows standard Greek and EU driving regulations. The island's road network includes well-maintained coastal routes and challenging mountain roads.

Road Conditions in Lesbos
The main road network connecting Mytilene, Molyvos, Kalloni, and Plomari is in good condition and suitable for all vehicle types. Secondary roads leading to remote beaches (such as Eftalou, Skala Eressos, or Tsonia Beach) and mountain villages may be narrow, unpaved in sections, and require careful driving.
An SUV or 4x4 rental is recommended if you plan to visit the western part of the island (Sigri, Eressos) or explore off-the-beaten-path locations. The petrified forest area and some thermal spring sites have rough access tracks.
Fuel and Refuelling
Petrol (βενζίνη — venzini) and diesel (πετρέλαιο — petreleo) are widely available in Mytilene, Molyvos, Kalloni, Plomari, and Petra. However, western and northern villages have limited fuel stations. Always refuel before heading into remote areas — distances between stations can exceed 40 kilometres on mountain routes.
Fuel Policy: Most rental cars come with a full-to-full policy — you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full. Keep your final refuelling receipt. Some companies charge a refuelling fee if you return the car with less fuel than received.
Parking in Lesbos
Mytilene town centre has metered street parking (blue zones) and paid car parks near the port and waterfront. Molyvos village has limited parking near the castle — arrive early in peak season. Most beaches and attractions outside towns offer free parking areas, though spaces fill quickly in July and August.
Avoid parking in areas marked with yellow kerb lines (no stopping) or blocking narrow village streets. Always use official parking areas when available.
Toll Roads
There are no toll roads on Lesbos. All island roads are toll-free, making budgeting straightforward.
