Samos offers scenic drives through mountains, coastal roads, and traditional villages. Here's what you need to know before you hit the road.
General Driving Rules in Greece
- Drive on the right-hand side of the road (same as mainland Europe).
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on national roads (no motorways on Samos).
- Seat belts: Mandatory for all passengers. Children under 12 must sit in the rear with appropriate restraints.
- Mobile phones: Hands-free only. No texting while driving.
- Alcohol limit: 0.05% BAC (0.02% for novice drivers with less than 2 years' experience).
- Parking: Pay attention to blue zone markings in towns (paid parking). White lines indicate free parking.
Road Conditions on Samos Island
Main roads connecting Samos Airport, Pythagorion, Vathy, and Kokkari are well-maintained asphalt. However, some mountain roads and rural routes can be narrow with sharp turns. If you plan to explore remote beaches or mountain villages (such as Manolates or Vourliotis), consider renting a 4x4 or SUV for extra ground clearance.

Fuel and Petrol Stations
Petrol stations (βενζίνη for petrol, πετρέλαιο for diesel) are available in main towns like Vathy, Pythagorion, Karlovassi, and near Samos Airport. Most stations accept cards, but it's wise to carry some cash for remote areas. Fuel prices in Greece are comparable to other EU countries.
Tip: Fill up before long drives to remote areas — petrol stations in mountain villages may have limited hours.
Important: Samos has no toll roads. All main routes are free to use. However, if you plan to take a ferry to nearby islands (like Patmos or Ikaria), check ferry schedules and vehicle transport fees in advance.
